17 of The Hills' Most Memorable Fashion Moments

Why wear one C&C California tank when you can wear two at the same time?!

In honor of The Hills' 10-year anniversary, we're bringing you the best fashion moments that Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port, and the rest of the cast brought to you during their six-year tenure at MTV. Through the awkwardly long stares, the birth of Speidi, and a constantly teary-eyed Conrad, their style defined an era. Take a walk down memory lane with bubble hems, low-rise bootcut jeans, distinctively 2009 accessories, ill-fitting everything, and everything else you wore in high school that you want to forget. (For women like myself that aged alongside the crew, aren't you glad we didn't have Facebook—much less a camera crew—immortalizing these horrors?)

Headbands, headbands, headbands....

Before there was Blair Waldorf, there was Lauren Conrad (who dropped the LC nickname after Laguna Beach). As the patron saint of all things basic (a term she now embraces!), she created the pinspirational look of the preppy-casual-flirty-girl stereotype. Since then she has amassed an empire of fashion lines, books, and websites, but she will forever be the girl who had a headband in every color, print, and style.

Nothing says mid-2000s quite like the oversized sunnies that ruled the decade. If they didn't cover half your face, they weren't big enough.

Audrina's 'edgy' style

Audrina Patridge was the "cool" girl of the show, with her totally legit "job" at a music label, smokey eyeliner, and token bad boy Justin Bobby on her arm. Justin Bobby, "a man so great he needed two names," was the original LA fuccboi. His sometimes man bun/ disheveled hair, apathetic attitude, Johnny Depp-lite fashion style, and 2 a.m. booty calls wins him the title. Anyway, here they are in matching leather jackets walking home from a band Audrina was "scouting." She styled her jackets over a T-shirt dress (remember those?) and heels, because that's totally what you wear to a rock concert.

The Guy Laroche Gown That Tripped Up Whitney

Whitney Port, the sweet, humble, drama-free character on the show, was asked to model on live television during her time at Teen Vogue. Giving the nation a skewed perspective of what an intern does at a fashion magazine (for one, they don't go to Paris?), Port appeared on Good Morning America wearing Hilary Swank's Guy Laroche Oscars dress. In a moment of rare inelegance, she stumbled down the stairs and quietly cried afterward, but in Port's true, even-keeled nature, there were no tantrums like we'd see from Heidi.

Awkward Beanie

Another key indicator of the times are oversized knit beanies, precariously worn so far back on your head you needed bobby pins to secure it in place. You know, instead of wearing it properly, you used hardware to keep it from falling. Also note that these girls live in Los Angeles, where cold-weather accessories are never needed.

Babydoll dresses

The infamous "I want to forgive you, and I want to forget you" moment. Wise words that can be applied to this dress silhouette, too.

The empire waist was also the choice outfit of choice for Les Deux, The Opera, or any other dramatically named LA nightclub.

Going out tops

But if you didn't opt for the empire waist dress, you chose a going out top in shiny satin. RIP, cute blouse you only wore once because that Sex on the Beach cocktail stain never came out.

Ultra-Low Rise Jeans

High-waist jeans just did not exist and 3" rises were all the rage during the height of the show. But what came first, the jeans or the popularization of the Brazilian bikini wax? Chicken or the egg, man.

Layered C&C California Tanks

The Hills starlets had no shortage of basic cotton tanks. Worn two at a time with the white cami as the base, they were the casual crop top of the time.

Statement jewelry

You know what would really spice up double camis and low-rise bootcut jeans? Giant friggin' earrings, jeweled necklaces, and multi-layered bangles, all at once. 2009, what a time to be alive.

Unclear dress codes

This was a black-tie event, yet we have Heidi in a floor-length gown, her sister Holly in a completely backless number, Stephanie Pratt in a fur vest, and not pictured is Lauren Conrad and Lo Bosworth at the same party...wearing blazers. Seriously, what's the point of announcing a dress code if nobody seems to follow it?

Bubble hems

Nothing says "I'm hiding my lunch" quite like the ill-fitting bubble hemline that has thankfully retired since its peak performance during The Hills.

The wedding dress

Remember that statement jewelry bit above? Apply that tenfold to post-surgery Heidi Montag. On her bedazzled bridal look, Stephanie Pratt said it best: "you actually accessorized a wedding dress." Yes, yes she did.
