Feel the rain on your skin

10 Years Later, Lauren Conrad Is Returning to The Hills

She’s filming a reunion special for MTV.

Believe it or not, today is the 10th anniversary of the premiere of MTV’s The Hills. It marks the occasion of the very first time we watched Lauren Conrad climb into her black convertible and drive up the Pacific Coast Highway towards the glittering lights of Hollywood, ready to go to fashion school and get caught up in all sorts of delicious drama with her best friend Heidi Montag. Ten years later, the show (and its questionable reality status) still looms large in our cultural consciousness. One might say we were still “reaching for something in the distance, so close you could almost taste it.” Star Lauren Conrad could feel that proverbial rain on her skin, and that’s why she’s finally answering our prayers with news of an anniversary special.

Conrad first teased a special new project with MTV last week on Instagram, and MTV revealed that she’d be following up with more information today.

Now, the wait is over. In a long and thoughtful blog post on her Web site titled “The Hills: That Was Then, This Is Now,” Conrad announced that she’d be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the show by doing “something I haven’t done in over a decade; I watched the pilot episode of our show.”

Conrad goes on to say, “Even though I know how it all ends, it was a little difficult watching my younger self struggle—I was in way over my head!” While her Hills successor Kristin Cavallari has said that she’s unable to watch herself on the show (she recently called it “brutal”), Conrad writes that, “I am so proud of the show.”

Conrad thanks the producers who worked behind the scenes to document—and at times create (perhaps a nod to the ever present question as to just how “real” The Hills is)—her reality during those years. She also thanks her fans for the years of support.

As a way of giving back to all of said fans for continuing to stick with her since the show ended, Conrad revealed something that’s sure to excite devoted Hills fans everywhere. “I will be partnering with MTV on a special project that will air on August 2nd at 10 PM. We will be having an honest conversation about what it was really like living with cameras for so many years (spoiler alert: it was super weird), sharing some behind-the-scenes secrets, and showing my life today.”

MTV confirmed the news of the special, which will be called The Hills: That Was Then, This Is Now, to VF.com. “Lauren Conrad, the protagonist and star of The Hills, takes us back to revisit MTV’s cultural phenomenon in celebration of the show’s 10-year anniversary. Lauren cuts through the clutter to address some of the show’s best-kept secrets and reveal what it was really like living her pivotal years on camera. She looks back on her tumultuous early days in LA and explains how they led to her current successful career and loving marriage, answering all the questions the audience is dying to know along the way. As we reconnect with our favorite girl from Laguna, we realize she’s grown up to be a cultural icon . . . and she’s still not afraid to tell it like it is,” the network said in a statement.

Conrad doesn’t mention if she’ll be joined by any of the other key players from The Hills, but we can only hope that Whitney Port, Audrina Patridge, Justin Bobby Brescia, and even Conrad’s frenemies Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt will be dropping by. Conrad is taking questions from fans, though, so now is the time to ask her if she’s forgiven and forgotten Montag, which ending of the show she preferred, and if she still regrets not going to Paris.
