Stave Silos Are Favorites at Farms

Classic stave silos are common all across the breadbasket of North America, where they're used to store silage. Used as livestock feed during the winter months, it's cut during warmer weather, and blown into the silo using the fill tube on the side. A second chute allows for gravity unloading, either into a small shed (as depicted on this model), or directly into the barn.

The prototypes were constructed using wood or concrete planks that were tightly banded together to form a ring. To increase the strength toward the bottom, bands were installed at greater frequency.

The kit is based on a typical 50 foot high x 20 foot diameter vertical structure and features laser-cut wood components for a perfect fit plus tabbed and slot construction with peel and stick windows, doors, trim, roofing material, and support bands for ease of assembly. Detail parts include cast resin dome and unloading chute as well as plastic filler tube, laser-cut access ladder, white metal band clamps, and laser-etched cracked glazing for the shed. The model may be finished as either a wood or concrete structure. A complete scene can be modeled with kits #152-178 Midwest Farm Combo or #152-119 Country Barn, both sold separately.
